Biomarkers of Aflatoxin Exposure
View Program in the Global Health Directory
Subject: Health
Type: Research
Description: This project focuses on the identification of environmental and genetic risk factors for development of hepatocellular cancer in Taiwan. We previously demonstrated that, in conjunction with hepatitis B or C virus infection, aflatoxin B1, 4-aminobiphenyl and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons increase risk. The current focus is on a case-control study nested in a cohort established by our collaborator Dr. Chien Jen Chen in which over 25,000 subjects were recruited and approximately 350 cases will be identified. Blood samples will be analyzed for biomarkers of exposure to several environmental carcinogens and polymorphisms in genes involved in carcingen metabolism, DNA repair and oxidative stress will be determined.
